Art and Mathematics (Right Brain - Left Brain)

I believe that 94% of college is nothing but a long expensive memory game. Nothing is learned, only memorized to get a grade to move on to what people really want to take. 80% prereqs and 20% focused studies. I don't believe that college in any way "broadens people's horizons". That's what elementary and high school is for, we are kids, we don't know jack about anything, but once you graduate high school, unless you are pants-on-head retarded, you have pretty much grasped all that you are going to in the educational system.

Once you graduate high school, whatever you didn't learn in high school is going to screw you come prereq time. Sucked at english? Good Luck writing the 1000's of research papers you get. Math teacher sucked? get ready for a hard time. The idea of general studies in college is absolutely bananas to me. It nothing but what we learned is high school, just more focused and frustrating. English Comp? Apparently an even englishier english. Geology? Do really need to know whats going on with dirt? Sociology? Lets try to make as many excuses to why people are fucking stupid. Literature? When she said this, she meant this. . . mmmk. Chemistry? really? ALGEBRA!? Words can't describe the uselessness of Algebra for any standard human being, there is just absolute 100% no use for it. As a great philosopher once said, "Why?".

I am an artist, with emphasis on computer technology. I don't deal with dirt, or metaphors, finding x's, or try to psychologically analyze my clients. I take nothing, and make it into something. I make words pretty. I defrag, copy, paste, send, receive, install, posterize, desaturate. I am a digital artist. I am right brained.

It is a known fact that right brained people suck at anything like math, its common knowledge, yet we are forced by the government to fulfill the useless task of learning it. Something our brain is physically unable to comprehend for a lot of people, including me. The problem is, we aren't taught math, we aren't taught equations that will help us succeed in life. We are taught hypothetical situations. Its like a history teacher teaching us history as if Germany won WWII. Maybe 10% of all the humans in the world can possible use algebra. It's the only part of college that is not a memory game, its always changing. You could study for 3 hours, and the teacher can throw in one tiny addition to an equation and completely fuck up everything to tried to learn. For each type of equation, there are around 6 different ways to complete them, no teacher teaching the same method. My grandfather never helped me with my math homework the same way my dad did, and when I would turn in the homework that either of them helped me with would still be wrong cause their methods were not as same as the teachers.

My brother on the other hand? He can work an algebra equation with his feet. Can he draw, paint, or deign? No even in the slightest.

Was he ever forced to take art classes that he would have struggled in and possible failed? No. Why?
Why do left brain people have the easy ticked through college? The entire education system is left brain oriented

"Most individuals have a distinct preference for one of these styles of thinking. Some, however, are more whole-brained and equally adept at both modes. In general, schools tend to favor left-brain modes of thinking, while downplaying the right-brain ones. Left-brain scholastic subjects focus on logical thinking, analysis, and accuracy. Right-brained subjects, on the other hand, focus on aesthetics, feeling, and creativity.

How Right-Brain vs. Left-Brain Thinking Impacts Learning

Curriculum–In order to be more “whole-brained” in their orientation, schools need to give equal weight to the arts, creativity, and the skills of imagination and synthesis.

Instruction–To foster a more whole-brained scholastic experience, teachers should use instruction techniques that connect with both sides of the brain. They can increase their classroom’s right-brain learning activities by incorporating more patterning, metaphors, analogies, role playing, visuals, and movement into their reading, calculation, and analytical activities.

Assessment–For a more accurate whole-brained evaluation of student learning, educators must develop new forms of assessment that honor right-brained talents and skills."

I wish I could start a revolution against the unfairness of the education system towards people of an artistic nature. Our curriculum is always the first to be cut or shut down for school budgeting. Art buildings are always the smallest or oldest buildings on the campus. Everything has to be bought by the students, paper, pencils, paint, brushes, computers, printers. Everyone else gets a book and a calculator and they are set for all 4 years. Something needs to be done. I have been in college for right around 7 years now, simply because I have to take 200 classes that don't amount to anything, all while working full time so I can afford to take the stupid things and pay for every single thing that is required of me as an art student.

Right Brain's of the world unite.
